Tübingen from the water is a different city. From the market square or the Eberhard Bridge you see the houses, the towers, the students — but you see them the way everyone does. From a punting boat, a few meters below street level and closer to the water, you look Tübingen right in the face. Here are seven spots where, on every trip, we simply let the boat drift for a moment.
01 The Neckarfront
📍 Between the Eberhard Bridge and WöhrdstraßeTübingen’s most famous view: the colorful old-town houses above the green stone wall on the Neckar. From the boat you see not just the row, but how the houses climb upward — yellow, ochre, pink, white. At sunset they reflect in the water and Tübingen suddenly looks like a southern town. The best photo is roughly between the Hölderlin Tower and the collegiate church, from the water facing north.
02 The Hölderlin Tower
📍 Bursagasse 6The yellow tower right on the water, where the poet Friedrich Hölderlin spent the last 36 years of his life. Back then he was considered “mad.” Today the tower holds a small museum. From the boat you see exactly the bay window where Hölderlin sat and looked out at the Neckar. If you have time, it’s worth a visit — even if you’re not otherwise a poetry person.
03 The Collegiate Church
📍 Above the old townFrom the water you see the tower of the Collegiate Church of St. George rising above the rooftops. It was built at the end of the 15th century, making it one of the oldest university churches in the region. More intriguing than the architecture: the crypt holds 13 dukes of Württemberg, right beneath the stream of tourists.
04 The Needle’s Eye
📍 West end of the Neckar islandThe narrowest point on Tübingen’s whole waterway. Here the Neckar gets so narrow that only a single punting boat fits through. It’s also where the action happens at the annual punt race in June: a hundred boats, one needle’s eye, one winner. Once you see the spot up close, you understand why the race is so brutally funny.
05 The Plane Tree Avenue
📍 North bank of the Neckar islandProbably the most beautiful avenue in Germany: over 200 plane trees along the Neckar island, planted in the early 19th century. From the water you see the trees from an angle pedestrians never get — the leafy canopy from below and the roots reaching into the water. A green tunnel in summer, fiery red in fall.
06 The Burse
📍 Bursagasse, right by the Hölderlin TowerThe yellow-and-pink building next to the Hölderlin Tower was once a student burse (a kind of shared dorm in the 15th century). Hegel, Hölderlin, and Schelling, among others, lived here during their studies — three of the most important German philosophers, all at the same time in one house. Once you start wondering what they discussed over dinner, the trip becomes a whole different thing.
“In 100 years Tübingen produced more philosophers than most countries do in 500. And they all looked out the window at the same Neckar we’re on right now.”
07 The Casino Point
📍 Eastern tip of the island, by the CasinoWhere the Neckar splits around the island and flows back together, at the eastern end by the Casino dock. This is where you get the widest view: the Neckarfront to your right, the avenue to your left, the open river ahead. Anyone out with us for 1.5 hours sees this spot automatically. On the one-hour taster trip we turn back before it.
How do we see it all best?
We recommend the 1.5-hour loop around the Neckar island. It is the only tour that covers all seven spots. An hour is enough for the Neckarfront, the Hölderlin Tower, and the Burse. Two hours are a luxury: then we simply let the boat drift for a few minutes at the prettiest spots.
If one particular spot interests you most, let us know. We shape the tour around you, not around a program.
